Castillo Perelada Gran Claustro 2008 is the best cava of the British market, according to The Wines from Spain Awards and Tim Atkin (MW)

Castillo Perelada’s Gran Claustro 2008 has been proclaimed the best cava of the British market in The Wines from Spain Awards 2012. In a rigorous blind tasting, a jury of 17 professionals chaired by Tim Atkin MW has determined that this Brut Nature, a blend of Pinot Noir (43%), Chardonnay (43%) and Parellada (14%), is the best cava currently sold in the United Kingdom.

It is also noteworthy that another Castillo Perelada, the Brut Reserva, also appears in the select group of the best eight cavas of this competition.

Castillo Perelada’s wines and cavas are being distributed in the British market since the 1960’s.

The Master of Wine Tim Atkin is one of the most influential wine journalists in the world. He is also a co-chairman of the International Wine Challenge and, throughout his career, has received more than twenty awards for his journalism.

The rest of the jury, comprising some of the top palates in the UK, was a combination of sommeliers, buyers, journalists, consultants and winemakers, as follows: Pierre Mansour (The Wine Society); Peter McCombie MW; Anthony Rose; Charles Metcalfe; Noel Young (Noel Young Wines); Jo Ahearne (Harrods); John Radcliffe; Joe Wadsack; Joan Torrents (Enotria); Ben Cahill (Co-op); James Griswood (Tesco); Christine Parkinson (Hakkassan); Nick Room (Waitrose); Allan Cheesman; Helen McEvoy (Laithwaites); Richard Bigg (Camino).

The Wines from Spain Awards are organized by the Wines fromSpainoffice, which is part of the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade. This year, 903 wines participated in the competition.

Activities are planned to bring the winning wines to the attention of wine-interested consumers.  A smart, informative consumer guide is being produced; winning wines will be shown at The Three Wine Men and Wine Gang consumer shows and Wines fromSpainwill be working with independent wine merchants to promote winning wines to their customers.  A Trade and Press tasting of the winning line takes place on 27th September 2012.
