“An increase in quality is what experience has shown to be the long-term result of constructive social and environmental investment. Our philosophy is simple: if you care about the people that do the work, the people care about the work they do. The same can be said about the way we respect and care for our environment. The De Bos range of wines is an extension of this vision – both a celebration and reminder that man and nature need to respect each other, and small contributions could have a great impact.”

With these words, Bosman Family Vineyards Managing Director Petrus Bosman announced a new dawn for their De Bos range of wines.

De Bos wines are handcrafted from nature’s bounty through a unique partnership born out of ancient lineage and a community’s unified respect for the land they own, the vines they graft, the vineyards they manage, the grapes they harvest and the families they are members of. Created by the 8th generation Bosman family and Adama Appollo Workers Trust, the De Bos range is a tribute to this successful partnership.

“Only the best fruit from vineyards in the exciting wine regions of Hermon, Walker Bay and Wellington were selected for the making of these wines,” says accomplished winemaker Corlea Fourie. The result is the De Bos range: the Handpicked Chenin Blanc 2012, a superlative wine with sur lie creaminess and typical Wellington stone fruit characteristics; the De Bos Walker Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2012, a perfect example of balance and freshness; and the De Bos Handpicked Cabernet Sauvignon 2011, a symbol of superb artisanal craftsmanship.

“We nurture the grapes to form elegant wines with pure fruit and varietal expression, and an authentic reflection of the sites and regions they are hand-harvested from,” says Fourie. “We are custodians of our vineyards from the process of grafting our vines by hand to crafting these wines by hand and this creates very real expression of our pursuit of excellence.”

Each bottle of De Bos wine is a proud achievement, celebrated by every individual who became a link to its final conception. These are links bound like granite through a philosophy shaped over generations; multiple decades of know-how transferred from generation to generation.

Proud of its meticulous standards, the De Bos enterprise has been recognised for its social and environmental contributions through accreditation with the internationally renowned Fairtrade organisation. The De Bos wines are handcrafted from vine to wine, while a model empowerment initiative acknowledges the long-standing relationship with workers on the farm.

The Bosman family story began in 1699, when the land that is now its home was first granted to a French Huguenot by the then Cape Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel. Around the same time, the family’s first ancestor – Hermanus Bosman – settled in South Africa. Records from 1707 show he was a sieketrooster (caregiver) who worked in the Cape.

Today, the tradition of the earliest caregiver – epitomised in the Bosman family crest by the words faith, hope and love – is extended through a variety of initiatives that make De Bos a leading innovator in vine and wine production as well as a community builder of distinction.

The De Bos wines are available across South Africa from Makro and other leading retailers and restaurants.
