Two Perelada red wines, Finca Espolla 2011 and Finca La Garriga 2011, have again picked up Bacchus Gold awards at the Bacchus International Wine Competition.

The 2016 competition, which took place in Madrid over four days, from 17 to 21 March, brought together a large jury comprised of buyers from well-known Spanish and international retailers and wine critics.  Big names at Bacchus 2016 included Pierre Casamayor (Revue de Vin de France, France), Bernard Burtschy (Le Figaro, France), Rocío Amador (Guide Peñin, Mexico) and Luis Lopes Ramos (Revista de Vinhos, Portugal). Key decision makers, i.e. buyers from supermarket and wine store chains from around the world, including Dutchman, Spike Huisman, senior manager at Ahold, the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands; Anders Barren, the Spanish wine buyer at the Swedish monopoly (Systembolaget); and Ursula Beutler, purchasing director for Swiss supermarket chain, Denner, were all in attendance at the prestigious Bacchus 2016 event, heading an influential set of buyers which also included the most important in Spain, such as Makro buyer, Andrea Alonso.

This is the second consecutive Gold Bacchus for Finca Espolla:  It already picked up the award last year for its 2010 vintage.  Finca Espolla is a 21-hectare vineyard located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the area known as Les Alberes, which is characterized by its slate soil with a distinctive black colour. The vineyards are planted at a high density of 6,200 vines per hectare in order to curb the vine’s vigor and reduce its grape production, thereby obtaining high-quality wines with a distinct personality.

Finca Espolla 2011 is a blend of Syrah (75%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Garnatxa (5%), aged for 15 months in new French Allier oak Bordeaux barrels.  The result is a wine with an intense cherry red hue with a purple rim.  Its aroma is reminiscent of sweet fruits with balsamic and mineral overtones. Powerful yet smooth, the wine is long-lasting and expressive on the palate, with a lively acidity that adds freshness. This is a wine with a strong personality of the terroir from which it hails.

Finca La Garriga also picked up a Gold Medal for its 2011 vintage from the Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada.

This 100% Samsó monovarietal (the local name for Cariñena /Carignan) is made from grapes grown on vines which are over 50 years old, the oldest at Perelada.   Aged for 19 months in Bordeaux barrels of fine American oak, Finca La Garriga 2011 displays an intense cherry hue with a purple rim and releases red fruit and balsamic aromas against a smoky backdrop. It is fresh and lively on the palate, with lovely smooth, enveloping tannins. This is a wine with the distinct native and varietal personality of the vine from which it hails.
