Cava of the Year 2013

Castillo Perelada Gran Claustro Brut Nature 2008, Cava of the Year 2013

-Gran Claustro Brut Nature 2008 has been named Cava of the Year at the last edition of the Mundus Vini Great International Wine Award.

– The Spanish cellar got three Gold Medals at this contest. Besides cava Gran Claustro, Finca Malaveïna 2009 and 5 Fincas 2008 also received the award.

– This is the second time that a Castillo Perelada wine gets the highest score of its category. In 2005, Gran Claustro Tinto was named the best red wine of the year.

Gran Claustro Brut Nature 2008 is a blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Parellada aged for fifteen months in the bottle, before disgorging. Clean and  bright, it is pale yellow with some hints of green. It has a generous and steady bubble stream that forms a perfect crown. On the nose there are ripe fruit aromas and ageing tones. This wine has a well balanced taste, slightly fruity, dry and smooth. It is also broad and long in the mouth.

Mundus Vini, under the patronage of the international wine organisations OIV (Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin, Paris) and Union Internationale des Œnologues (UIOE, Paris), is one of the most important wine contests in Europe. This year, it has beaten its own record again: 6,212 wines from 45 countries took part in the competition

Meanwhile, Finca Malaveïna 2009 confirms with this new Gold Medal as a very successful vintage. This is its third important award, after getting the highest score at the last edition of Concurso Internacional de Vinos Bacchus (Spain) and receiving the Gold Medal at Sélections Mondiales des Vins (Canada).

Finca Malaveïna 2009 is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Garnatxa Tinta aged for 16 months in French oak barrels. Deep cherry red in colour, its deep aroma reminds of red fruits and displays some spicy notes. In the mouth it is round, meaty, well structured and balsamic. Its acidity is very fresh. Tannins are ripe. Excellent balance, great palate and long after-taste. Finca Malaveïna sports the marked personality of the vineyard where it was born, and has a long ageing potential. It is sold in 75cl, 150cl and 300cl bottles.

Finally, 5 Fincas 2008, which also got a Gold Medal at the Concurso Internacional de Vinos Bacchus held in Madrid a few months ago, is a blend of selected Garnatxa, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from the five vineyards that Castillo Perelada owns in the Empordà. It aged for 21 months in Bordeaux barrels (50% fine American oak, 50% Allier French oak). 5 Fincas 2008 has a cherry red colour and an enveloping aroma that reminds of ripe fruit, with balsamic notes and a toasted background. In the mouth it is wide, well-structured and balanced. Its tannins are round and fine. It has a very fresh acidity. This is a wine with a great personality, nice in the mouth, with a long after-taste. 5 Fincas 2008 is sold in 75cl and 150 cl bottles.
